In the 13th and 14th centuries the Mongol Empire was preeminent. Founded in 1206AD by the Genghis Khan, Temuchin and beginning in the Central Asian steppes, it eventually stretched from Central Europe to the Sea of Japan, covering Siberia in the north and extending southward into Indochina, the Indian subcontinent, the Iranian plateau, and the Middle East. It was one of the largest contiguous land empires in human history.
